Découverte d'un nouveau type d'anesthésique dans le venin d'abeille zoom

Une équipe de chercheurs grecs et chypriotes a collaboré avec le laboratoire Evolution, Génomes et Spéciation du CNRS. Dans leurs travaux publiés dans la revue PLoS ONE, les chercheurs montrent que la morsure des abeilles domestiques (Apis mellifera) contient un composé, la 2-heptanone (2-H) dont la propriété est d'être un anesthésique naturel, à la fois efficace et très peu toxique. Cette découverte qui a fait l'objet d'un brevet pourrait amener à la production d'un anesthésique local présentant une très faible toxicité pour les hommes et les animaux.

Cette étude montre que la 2-heptanone, sécrétée par les glandes mandibulaires des abeilles, paralyse les petits arthropodes mordus par les abeilles, pendant plusieurs minutes. Les abeilles utilisent cette méthode très efficace contre certains prédateurs et parasites qui sont trop petits pour être piqués et tués par leur venin.

En comparant les propriétés anesthésiantes de la 2-heptanone et celles de la lidocaïne, un anesthésiant très répandu, les chercheurs ont montré que leurs propriétés étaient très proches et que ces deux molécules agissaient en bloquant certains canaux sodium. Mais la 2-heptanone présente l'avantage d'être bien moins toxique que cet anesthésique local, ce qui lui ouvre de grandes perspectives d'utilisation thérapeutiques.
