La Nasa développe la plus grande fusée jamais créée : objectif : Mars !

La Nasa a signé un contrat de 2,8 milliards de dollars avec le constructeur aéronautique Boeing afin de construire la plus puissante fusée jamais conçue. Haute de 117 mètres et pesant plus de 3.000 tonnes, la nouvelle fusée que va développer la Nasa permettra de mettre en orbite des charges de plus de 100 tonnes.
Destinée à l’exploration habitée lointaine, cette fusée s'inscrit dans le cadre du programme SLS, destiné principalement à l’exploration d’astéroïdes et à terme de Mars à partir de 2035. Mais cet appareil sera aussi un nouvel outil précieux pour la recherche scientifique : «il va permettre des avancées dans de nombreux domaines notamment la science de l’espace» a déclaré Steve Creech, directeur adjoint du programme de la stratégie et des partenariats pour SLS.
La première version du lanceur sera capable de propulser dans l'espace une charge utile allant de 70 à 100 tonnes, avant d'évoluer pour accroître cette capacité jusqu'à 140 tonnes. Le vol inaugural du SLS est prévu pour 2017.
